City Nature Challenge ABQ

City Nature Challenge ABQ invites everyone in Bernalillo, Sandoval, and Valencia Counties to explore nature in and around your community and share your observations from April 25-28, 2025. You can look for wildlife on your own, or attend a public event. Help us compete against cities all over the world!
It’s easy to participate.
Set up an account at iNaturalist.org or in the iNaturalist app, and join the CNC ABQ 2025 project at inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2025-abq if you'd like updates.
Take and submit your photos of animals and their signs (tracks, scat, feathers, etc.), plants, and fungi that you find during the challenge.
Help identify others’ observations, and have iNaturalist and its community help you, thru May 5th at 9am.
City Nature Challenge is an annual global collaborative effort to find and document wildlife observations in and around urban areas, organized by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and California Academy of Sciences. Join nature enthusiasts worldwide while discovering the biodiversity in our area.
Activities/Resources
Students 13 and up can make their own account. For those under 13, teachers can make a class account that they manage, and parents/guardians can give permission on iNaturalist for them to have an account.
Teachers, visit the City Nature Challenge Education Toolkit for guidance on how to participate with your class, and access activities aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for all grade levels:
Activity/Resource Website: https://www.citynaturechallenge.org/education-toolkit
You can also use iNaturalist, or its partner app Seek that’s geared more toward kids, all school year to get your students engaged in the outdoors and looking closely for species that live around them, from bugs to beavers.
Contact Laurel Ladwig at pbgrebe@gmail.com if you want to form a class or school team, and provide a name for your team and a photo/logo if you’d like.
